Why do we give chocolate coins?
They’re a lovely gift to give at Christmas but why do we give foil wrapped chocolate coins as gifts? It’s a cross over from another celebration – Hanukkah! The chocolate coins are called gelt. This is Yiddish for money. Gelt is used for playing games with a dreidel instead of real money and the origins date back many centuries although chocolate was only introduced into Europe after Columbus.
The chocolate coins we see today are very fancy with foil embossed patterns and moulded chocolate too. It’s a culmination of twentieth century ideas which have seen it available every Christmas for many years. Chocolate money is a lovely stocking filler gift for anyone.

Dark chocolate is good for you. You don't need to eat a huge amount of it - a square or two a day can be very effective!
A few squares of a good quality dark chocoate can contain nearly four times the amount of antioxidants of a piece of fruit or vegetables.
Professor Carl Keen, of the University of California, reported that eating small amounts of chocolate could have as powerful an anti-clotting effect on the blood as taking aspiri
At the University of Aberdeen some research has shown that flavanols, a form of antioxidant present in chocolate with a high cocoa mass, can help prevent the activation of platelets in the blood, which contribute to heart disease
Chocolate is a rich sources of magnesium too!
It's a mood enhancer too with daily dosing being recommended! The best way of enjoying dark chocolate is to allow a square to melt on your tongue so you can enjoy all the flavours as it melts.
