History of the advent calendar
Advent calendars were first seen in Germany in the 19th century - as with so many of our Christmas traditions! The first calendars would probably have been just marking off the days
- but later lighting candles would have been part of the ceremony and
then bringing out christmas or religious ornaments each day would take
place. Gerhard Lang printed the first calendar after being inspired by his mother who first combined sweets and a calendar made of card. Later developemtns would have included tiny cardboard windows to open. Inside the calendar would be pictures of christmas items, religious symbols or even verses from the bible. Calendars have developed these days to include chocolates behind the window! A lovely idea is to collect 25 tree ornaments - 24 hanging ones and then a tree topper for the final day. These can be unwrapped day by day and the tree decorated! About the same time as you start opening the advent calendar you should think about what tree you're getting. Should you get a fibre-optic Chritmas tree? |
